Biography

Popill is held by the Lauders of the Bass. David Lauder was an adult by 1443 and he was married before 25th April 1450.

A David de Lauder resigned two husbandlands (52 acres) and one cotland in the territory of Tyninghame into the hands of the Archbishop of St. Andrews, his feudal superior, on the 20th June 1443. The charter was signed on "le Crag" which probably means The Bass Rock.[1]

On the 7th June 1447, at Dirleton, "David de Lauder of The Bass (sic), and John Lauder his brother natural", were witnesses to a charter of Sir John Haliburton of that Ilk who was leasing one quarter of the lands of his lordship of Lambden to Thomas Haytli (Hateley or Haitlie) and Alexander Hateley, brothers-german, sons of the late John Hately, squire, who had held the same lands of the granter and his predecessors in fee in past years.[2]

This David Lauder, and his wife Mariotta [surname not given] were invested in the lands of Popill by charter dated 25th April 1450, where David is described as uncle of a Robert Lauder of Edrington.[3] There is there is mention of the lands of Popill pertaining to David de Lawedre in 1454.[4]

A notorial instrument dated 13th May 1465 narrates that Robert Lauder, son and apparent heir of Sir Robert Lauder of Edrington, Knt., asserted that David Lauder of Popill had given sasine and heritable possession to his eldest son James Lauder and Jonete his spouse, their heirs etc., of a certain piece of land at Popill, to the prejudice of the first-mentioned Robert, who solemnly protested that the said sasine should neither be valid nor prejudice his right in the land, and for greater security, he, by throwing of earth and stone outside the house belonging to the piece of land, and by breaking a plate with his foot, broke and annulled the said sasine and so possession by James Lauder and his wife. Done at Popil at 7 a.m. on 13th May 1465 before Henry Ogil in Popill, James Ogil his eldest son, and others.[5]

It appears from the Exchequer Rolls that David Lauder of Popill died circa 1466/7. He left descendants.
